Lubricating the Steering Stem

The steering stem of a traditional steering column (threaded headset) must be sufficiently lubricated when you mount it, to avoid sticking and squeaking.

Ideally you need mounting paste for this procedure. Mounting paste increases the friction of the parts to be mounted. Special pastes exist for aluminium and carbon. Grease can be used on your old metal frame bike.

  1. Loosen the stem bolt and remove the steering.
  2. Clean the stem: remove old grease or paste. Also clean the inside of the fork.
  3. Apply a thin layer of mounting paste to the stem.
  4. Insert the stem in the fork.
  5. Fasten the stem bolt.

The steering stem is now sufficiently lubricated and should no longer squeak. You will be able to adjust and remove it easily in the future. Your steering will no longer squeak when you ride over bumps.
